FL protraction: Sets: 2 Reps: 2 Freq: 3 x week Hold: 15-30 sec Rest: 15 sec

Pick up the forelimb. Support the elbow as you slide your leg forward to rest the horse’s lower leg on your thigh. Slowly lunge forward to extend the horse’s shoulder forward.

Don’t force the horse into the position but let them guide the amount of stretch that they are comfortable with.


FL protraction toe hold: Sets: 2 Reps: 2 Freq: 3 x week Hold: 15-30 sec Rest: 15 sec

Pick up the forelimb. Slowly extend it forward, supporting the hoof and the pastern.

Don’t force the horse into the position but let them guide the amount of stretch that they are comfortable with.


Forelimb retraction: Sets: 2 Reps: 2 Freq: 3 x week Hold: 15-30 sec Rest: 15 sec

Stand at the shoulder facing forward. Pick up the forelimb, placing one hand on the knee and the other around the fetlock. Gently bring the limb backwards.


Scapula mobility: Sets: 2 Reps: 8 Freq: 3 x week Rest: 15 secs

Stand facing the horse’s shoulder. Pick up the forelimb, wrapping your inside arm around the top of the leg with your hand on the point of the elbow, supporting the fetlock with your other hand.

Gently draw the shoulder forwards, hold for a couple of seconds, and then draw the shoulder backwards, hold for a couple of seconds.

Continue to repeat this action.


Forelimb abduction mobility: Sets: 2 Reps: 8 Freq: 3 x week Rest: 15 secs

Pick up the forelimb, facing the horse’s shoulder. Wrap your inside arm around the top of the leg with your hand on the point of the elbow, supporting the fetlock with your other hand. Gently draw the leg directly out to the side.

Hold for a few seconds and then relax the limb back in. Repeat the movement for the required number of repetitions.

With a treat or toy lure the dog to stand on the securely stabilized peanut; reward. Using the treat or toy to maintain a standing position, slowly lift each paw one at a time.

Sit to Stand TL Peanut: Sets: 2 Reps: 10 Freq: 3x/week

With a treat or toy lure the dog to place the thoracic paws on the securely stabilized peanut; reward. Ask the dog to sit; reward. To prevent the dog from stepping off the equipment, place the dog between a wall and the peanut.

Lateral Crunches Hip: Sets: 2 Reps: 10 Freq: 3x/week

With a treat or toy lure the dog into a lateral recumbent position; reward. Hold the bottom thoracic limb. With the treat or toy lure the dog to laterally crunch to the hip.


Metacarpal Mobility: Sets: 1 Reps: 10 Freq: after training

Holding the long bones of the paw, gently move the bones up and down on each other in a scissoring-like motion.


Latissimus dorsi Stretch: Sets: 1 Reps: 1 Freq: 1x/day Hold: 30 seconds

With one hand stabilize the shoulder joint. With the other hand, lift the limb into a straight plane (parallel to the floor). Taking three to five seconds, extend, mildly abduct and externally rotate the shoulder to slight resistance.


Sartorius and Rectus femoris Stretch: Sets: 1 Reps: 1 Freq: 1x/day Hold: 30 seconds

With one hand stabilize the hip joint. With the other hand, lift the limb into a straight plane (parallel to the floor). Taking three to five seconds, extend the hip and flex the stifle to slight resistance.
